Play, organize and buy songs

iTunes is a software from Apple Inc. that can play, organize and buy songs (from iTunes Store). iTunes can also be used to manage content on iPod, iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. The iOS users use iTunes to download the application from the App Store. The software is available in a version that can be run using the operating system Mac OS X and Windows. Previous versions of iTunes that can also run on Mac OS 9 but Apple already does not provide it anymore. This tool has gained a reputation for being easy to use and a great song organization.

Before the advent of iTunes, a software company Casady & Greene has created a tool called SoundJam MP music player. Apple bought the software from Casady & Greene and took three programmers of the company to create iTunes. The first version of iTunes that looks very similar to SoundJam MP only coupled with the ability to record songs onto a CD and some changes in appearance. For the next version of Apple has added many other features.

It plays all your digital music and video. It syncs content to your iPod, iPhone, and Apple TV. And it's an entertainment superstore that stays open 24/7
iTunes has a feature that allows users to organize, modify the information and record songs on a CD. In addition, iTunes also can send the songs into the music player, the iPod, and also buy songs from the iTunes Store via the Internet.

One interesting feature of iTunes is its ability to create a Smart Playlist is a playlist that can change its content when users manipulate the songs in the collection.

Music library
iTunes stores information about each song in two different documents. The first document is a document with a binary format called iTunes 4 Music Library. This document is the main document used by iTunes to arrange collection of songs. The second document has an XML format called iTunes Music Library.xml. This document is not used by iTunes but is provided so that other software such as iDVD, iMovie and iPhoto are made by Apple itself, or other artificial devices can get complete information about the contents of a collection of songs belonging to the users iTunes.

Format documents

Currently iTunes can rotate the document format M4A, MP3, AIFF, WAV, AAC and Apple Lossless. Because iTunes using QuickTime technology, a lot of documents that can be played with QuickTime software can also be played with iTunes. iTunes can also play songs purchased from the iTunes Store and even free formats like OGG by adding plug-ins into a QuickTime component.

Windows version of iTunes could even turn into AAC WMA document types directly within the iTunes program. However, iTunes does not have the ability to play WMA document directly.

  • Library and Playlists. Use Sidebar to view your Library in new ways. Drag and drop songs to easily add them to Playlists. And Edit Sidebar to show only your favorite views. 
  • Menus in iTunes are now simpler and easier to use. Use the View menu to customize your Library or try context menus to act on specific items.
